Discovery Place

This weekend I took Brenden to Discovery Place. I had been there once a LONG time ago but really had no idea they had so much there for preschoolers. They have a room just for younger kids like Brenden. He had a great time and got to see his buddy Bryce from his old daycare too.

Upon entering the kids room there is a water table with all kinds of squirters and objects to squirt to make move. He could have stayed at this table all day.

His favorite activity by far was the giant "lite brite" toy. There were all of these colored cylinder pegs that you can put into the peg board and they light up. Brenden would put one in and then SCREAM out what color it was when it lit up and then DIE laughing. Soon he had about 6 other kids over at the activity just because they all saw how much fun he was having and wanted to join in.

It was 'all about trains' day there. I really expected more, but mostly you just got to do train themed activities. He got a cardboard conductor hat and got to put some cars and trains together at one of the activity tables.

Here is one of the activities they had in the section for older kids. These blocks were so cool. They are called citi blocs and they are so simple in design, but you can stack them up 5 feet tall and they were SO stable. I may go online and buy some of these for Brenden.

It was a great time. I really had no idea something like that would be so much fun for his age but I'd definitely LOVE to take him back there soon. It was totally worth the cost to see him have so much fun. He was on his best behavior (except for running away from me and trying to play in the one activity that was taped off because it was being repaired!) He really is so fascinated by educational activities so I think this was the perfect place for him. Next time I think we'll just stick to the young kids room and also I will pack my own lunch! $3.50 for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is robbery!

Playing around with the new Blog editor

I was just messing around with my blogger options and found that they have a new editor for posts so I thought I'd give it a try. I can't remember how I got to this particular option, but if you aren't fond of the current blog editor (and I know many of you aren't) then give this one a try. The picture uploader is a little nicer once you figure it out. When you select your pictures it opens a separate window and all the pictures you select are uploaded. Then from the second widow you can select one picture at a time to add to your blog. Its a little confusing at first as after each add you have to click the 'add image' icon again, but your uploaded images are saved there still so you can add another image without re-uploading it. It will make sense once you try it. The nice part is now you can choose what order your pictures are added to the blog instead of blogger putting them up in reverse order!

I got some pictures of the boys this week. Logan is on the move now so he's just as hard to photo as Brenen is.

Look at that happy boy. He looks so much better when his eyes aren't all red and watery!

My big boy Brenden. I love those big brown eyes. How can I say no to that face :) ?

And here is Logan making a silly face. He loves to play with spoons!

Its still not easy to move pictures around from within the blog editor, but having the option to choose the order and positioning in the first place really helps out. I plan to test this more!!

Weekend with the boys

Logan is officially super-mobile! He can crawl anywhere and everywhere and also is pulling himself up on his knees on objects. It won't be long before he's cruising. He definitely keeps me on my toes.

This weekend he discovered the ball pit and LOVES it!

Brenden didn't LOVE sharing his ball pit so he slid in on top of Logan and Logan decided to eat his hair instead. That boy loves hair!

Then we went to a local festival our city was having. It wasn't as kid-friendly as I thought it would be but we enjoyed ourselves. Brenden got to have his first funnel cake and inhaled it! No surprise there - who doesn't love funnel cake :)

There was a man making balloon animals so he made a turtle balloon for Brenden's wrist. Then he asked if our little girl would like a balloon too. I said "our BOY is fine thanks !" I guess with those curls and gender neutral clothing, he looks a little girly? I will be sure to make him look more masculine for our next outing!

I think Logan has allergies and this is why he got a bad sinus infection this past week. As soon as we went outside his poor little eyes turned red and watery. But does this REALLY look like a little girl? NO! :)

For Mother's day we all went out to dinner. Brenden decided to skip his nap earlier that day (not a very thoughtful Mother's day gift!) On the way home he fell asleep in the car and would NOT wake up. I took advantage of the cuddling - which he does so rarely these days. It was the best part of my day! (yes, he is sleeping with one eye open! I guess he wants to make sure Logan doesn't play with any of his toys)

Videos

I'll start with a few pictures from my day at the park with Brenden. I'll start by saying, for small town we have a pretty awesome park. They upgraded it a few years ago and put in a train, an outdoor amphitheatre and a splash pad. Sean kept Logan and gave me some special one on one time with Brenden. It was really fun for both of us.

Here is Brenden riding the train saying "toot! toot!" at the train whistle.

After the train we played on the slide. He had so much fun!

And then we finished the day with a cool blue slushie (only 50 cents.. how could I refuse?!)

MMMMmmmmmm!!!!

I have a few videos of the boys to post:

This is one of Brenden learning to count. I took this video a month ago and he counts SO much better now, but I think its cute that I have one of his first counting moments on video. He wanted to read this same book OVER and OVER so we started counting the bees on each page as a different way to enjoy the same book and then one day he just started counting them without us

This video is of Logan crawling this weekend. He's been taking a few crawls here and there, but just wasn't good at moving his hands and feet at the same time, but this weekend he finally figured it all out. He's not fast YET but he definitely can get to where he wants to go if he puts his mind to it. Brenden is not happy to have a mobile brother and he constantly reminds Logan "THAT'S MINE!" Joy!

My Buddy

It has taken me a little while to get to a point where I can write this blog. On April 19th I lost a very special friend. Buddy had been in my life for 14 years, and will remain in my heart forever.

Buddy wasn't just a dog, he was an adventure. It is because of Buddy that I will never own a puppy ever again. Have you ever seen that Tom Hanks movie "Turner and Hooch" - Well Buddy was like that dog. He had a good heart, but he destroyed anything in his path. He had awful separation anxiety and the minute he was left alone he'd destroy anything within his reach.

When he was just a puppy, my boyfriend at the time thought it was harmless enough to leash this tiny little dog to the leg of the couch while he went to work. I came home a few hours later to find the couch on the opposite side of the room - Buddy still leashed to the leg - and everything within the path destroyed. He ripped the arm off the couch, the cushion to shreds, ate 2 remote controls, chewed up all the shoes by the front door... it literally looked like a tornado went through my living room. And at the eye of the storm was this precious little puppy.

So next time he was leashed to the stove... I come home and find the stove pulled a foot away from the wall. The next day we tried the refrigerator. He managed not to move the fridge, but instead tore a giant circular section of the lenoleum floor.

So then we tried outside containments. This dog could give Houdini a run for his money. He broke unbreakable leads, broke chains, broke a collar off his neck, jumped fences and ate his way out of a plastic crate! He simply could not stand to be contained and left. All of this from a BEAGLE.. not exactly a big powerful dog, but definitely determined.

Finally after I moved into my own home he got over his separation anxiety. The house came with a doggy door in the laundry room that led into a nice fenced in dog pen. Of course I had to raise the fence from 3 ft to 5 ft because if he got a running jump he could clear the 3ft fence. He was happy to be able to come in and out of the house as he pleased and the separation anxiety finally ended.

Buddy was great with the kids. I was blessed enough to get a picture of him with each of the boys (Copper was afraid of the camera flash so we didn't have any of her and the kids)

Buddy and Brenden

In Buddy's old age he developed chronic skin, ear, and eye issues. This past year was a mountain of vet bills in an effort to make what we knew were his final months as comfortable as possible. April 18th, Buddy ran out of the bathroom, like he always does after a bath, and slipped on the kitchen floor and severly broke his leg. It never even occurred to me that the injury was THAT serious. I just figured I had another mountain of vet bills on my way but was willing to do whatever it took to keep Buddy around.

The next day when the vet was able to Xray the leg I learned the the injury was more serious than I thought. She immediately said he severly broke his femur into two pieces. It was a bad break and would take some major surgery to repair. Then she followed that statement with a lot of 'cons' for going forward with the surgery "but he's 14 years old, he's arthritic, this is an injury difficult for a young dog to recover, his corneas are perforating and he will be blind very soon... etc" It was at that moment I realized she was letting me know that he didn't stand a good chance at improving his life through leg surgery. She said he'd have a very poor quality of life trying to make a recovery like that, plus he had a heart murmer which made him a high risk for anesthesia. After her long speech I told her I needed to call her back while I absorbed all of the reality of the situation. After many tears I made one of the most difficult decisions of my life. I had Sean call them back (I couldn't do it) and told them I'd be there at lunch to spend some final moments with Buddy, and then I'd let them free him from his pain forever.

When I got to the vet she pulled me back into her office to show me the x-ray and to personally tell me she felt like I was making the right decision and that she could clearly see how much Buddy was loved and felt I'd done more than most to make his old age more comfortable. She also explained that bones don't break that easily and he probably was experiencing other issues (like cancer) to have such a serious injury from such a minor fall. She really helped me feel at peace with my decision. I was able to spend a good 30 minutes in a private room giving Buddy (who was drugged up and in lots of pain still) some love and then the nurses took him away. I just couldn't be there when they put him to sleep, but they promised me someone would.

Buddy wasn't just a destructive dog! He was a very energetic and fun dog. He had the classic beagle howl, except it sounded more like a hound because of his size. I would see grown men run back to their cars if they approached the house and heard Buddy howling. I would laugh and say 'um.. its just a beagle barking, you are safe.' I remember when we had the ice storm here in NC and I was without power for 3 days in the dead of winter. Buddy and I curled up in the bed and kept each other warm. At one point I swear I heard his little teeth chattering. He loved to make beds out of clothing. I once found him curled up around a sock he found on the floor. His name was so appropriate because thats what he was to everyone - a buddy. No matter what room you were in, he'd always have to be near you. He loved to lay in the sunshine until he was so hot you had to drag him into the shade for his own good!

He lived a good life and was very loyal to his "wife" Copper. He'd lick her eyes and ears clean and would protect her from anything. I am happy they are together again.

Buddy - you were a great friend and a constant source of energy and entertainment. You were the best snuggler on the planet and I will miss waking up and finding your head on my pillow as if you were human too. You have been one of the few constants in my adult life and have helped me through many tough situations. The house feels so empty without you here. I keep hearing sounds thinking its you and find myself saddened to realize it was just the house creaking. You are very much loved and missed. I hope you are running through the fields of heaven with joy in your heart. You were so tired and weak this past year, I can just picture you now, young and healthy, running as fast as you can with your big floppy ears blowing in the wind. I love you, friend.

SO Many Easter Pictures

The boys had a really nice Easter. Of course, Murphy's Law says that kids will only get injured whenever they will be photographed most. Poor Logan fell over from a sitting position and landed right on his cheekbone. His cheek bruised immediately and by Sunday the bruising had moved under his eye too. It was one of those injuries that just looks worse than what it really is. It never seemed to phase him. Brenden has always had very sensitive skin and gets breakouts anytime he is about to get photographed, so he woke up with a giant pimple on his cheek the day before Easter and he picked at it all day so it was nice and red for Easter Sunday. However, blemishes and bruises aside, their pictures turned out beyond adorable.

Here are some pictures of Brenden finding Easter eggs around the yard. He was SO into it this year. He loves his eggs and still refuses to let us put them away. They have migrated to the bathtub as bath toys now.

I took some pictures of the boys inside. Brenden had fun posing with his Easter Basket.

Logan was just all smiles for his picturs - when he wasn't trying to eat the eggs!

My favorite pictures were the ones taken outside. There were all of these little purple wildflowers growing in the yard and it made the perfect natural backdrop for the pictures. I started out just trying to take pictures of Logan (since he's the one who sits still) and Brenden immediately wanted to be part of the action so I got some great shots of both boys together, which is so rare!
My big boy Brenden.

Pretty Pose

My happy boys! I love these kids :)

I love the bright green grass in this picture.

Does it get any sweeter??

And big smiles from my super happy baby Logan!

Mama's boy!

My arms are full... and so is my heart...

We never give candy to Brenden. He's innocent enough that he doesn't really know what candy is and we want to take advantage of that for as long as possible. However, it IS Easter and what's an Easter basket without a little candy. So he got a few jelly beans and Sixlets candy. You can see how excited he is to get his candy....
